Are You Willing To Compromise
To Find A Work-At-Home Job?
by Barb Niehaus
As a publisher of a newlsetter that posts WAH jobs, I am
constantly deluged with emails from readers that desperately
want to work from home. Many are single moms, parents of
special needs children or those that are simply seeking refuge
from the 9-to-5 rat race. In a recent survey, over 70% of
"traditional" employees see telecommuting as the ideal
working solution. In my newsletters, I refer to telecommuting as
"the perfect balance between work and family."
The overwhelming majority of these hopeful
teleworkers are searching for data entry or virtual
assistant positions, Now..the keyword here is
majority. That implies immediately what competition
they're facing in their job hunt. I'm not trying to
discourage anyone but only the cream of the crop will
land these prized positions; those with exceptional
typing speed, extensive knowledge of software applications
and the ability to navigate their way around the Internet.
Employers that advertise telecommuting jobs receive
hundreds of responses and can afford to choose from
only the super-qualified candidate pool.
If you are sincere about wanting to work from home,
there are other alternatives that will help you in
reaching your goal in shorter time and with better chances,
SALES
- Yes, sales. Not necessarily telemarketing. Many
employers are searchign for Account Managers, This requires
a home-based employer to follow up on leads (generally
provided by the company), secure and close sales and maintain
these accounts in the future. Think you can't sell? Take a
look at your everyday life. Do you not persuade your current
boss for a badly needed raise, persuade your kids to clean their
rooms, persuade your spouse for help around the house,
persuade friends or acquaintances to help with that PTA
fundraiser, etc? We all have to "sell" at times - now try it for
money! Practice on a family member with a script until you
reach a comfort level. It gets easier and the more you sell,
the higher those commissions run. Income from sales
can be limitless.
BECOME A WEBSITE GUIDE - There are multitudes of
websites looking for Guides to represent their geographic
region or offer advice and links to a subject that the Guide
is knowledgeable and passionate about. About.com offers
their Guides 30% of monthly ad revenues. As you build your site
and your readership audience grows, your income increases,
at an accompanying rate. You don't need to be a professional writer-
you can beocme a Guide for your city and direct readers to
events and activities in your hometown. To find out more:

RECRUITING - I discovered this lucrative Internet profession
some time ago while searching for WAH jobs to post in my
daily newsletters. Professional recruiters are in huge demand
at this time. The beauty of a recruiting position is that your
job responsibilities are performed via the Internet. Place ads
for companies and if a desired candidate is hired you receive
a commission. In many instances, you are paid for future
"maintenance" of hired employees. You periodically call or
email them to insure that they are satisfied with the job
placement. A tidy sum is then paid to you to "check in" and
maintain good customer relations.
I realize these suggested professions may not be the
road you wanted to take to telecommute but the destination
is the same - "the perfect balance between work and family".
And that's the ultimate goal, isn't it?
