Teach Our Children?
by Judith Bron
If one more politician involved in this electorial debacle dares to spout concern about the lessons our children are learning I think I’lll
scream. From this great example of sore losers what can be gleaned? If this article seems partisan to you it probably is because I
am. I am seeing behavior from adults that I would have taken my children away from if ever they dared to have such friends.
No sooner was it announced in Florida that a recount of ballots was warranted under Florida law than the most obnoxious behavior
ever displayed by alleged adults began. We had one whiny adult stand up and tell us that we needed this occasion to teach our
children about the Democratic process. Another whiny adult stood up to announce that if these processes weren’t gone through than
the will of the people wasn’t being upheld. In short the will of the people was counted three times but according to the losing team it
wasn’t upheld because they didn’t win.
Friends, our children are getting a lesson in competition straight from the actions of adult political candidates on how not to lose. If
your child is involved in a sporting event, a debate or a spelling bee I’m sure all of them know that there will be a winner and loser in
each case. If they lose they wont feel great about it but at least they went in knowing the rules. They will not be surprised that their
parents were right when they told the child that there will be a loser to the contest. Why can’t adults realize that fair doesn’t always
mean that you win?
Since the onset of the greatest political debacle in American history a number of news reports have come out alleging that parents
entered a sports arena and beat up the coach or destroyed property because their child didn’t win or wasn’t getting enough playing
time. In my opinion all these actions are showing our children how not to play the game. As I mentioned at the beginning of the
article I am partisan but the actions and reactions of the other team through this whole thing make me even happier about my
political point of view. In the future what lessons are going to be gleaned from this situation that can be transmitted to our children?
Were these candidates really going to lead the American people in a fair and just way? After this display of obnoxious, whiny,
sophomoric behavior do they have the right to tell anyone to play the game fairly? It is easy to blame this whole episode on flawed
equipment, partisan politics or even the amount of makeup the Secretary of State in Florida chooses to wear but the outcome has
been decided according to the Constitution that has given more freedoms to the people than any other in history. I guess the time
has come to revert to that old adage, It's not if you win or lose that counts, it's how you play the game.
