This Work at Home Mom is a True Inspiration! This Mom's Business-Parenting Mix!
by Pamela Sabedra
I have always enjoyed the business world since 9th grade typing class. So when it came time for college, I majored in Business Administration and minored in MIS (Management Information Systems, which is a little towards the computer field)
Upon graduation, I found a job in a week working as an Administrative Assistant. This lasted for about a year until I was laid off. I then landed a job as a office manager/accounting clerk. This was a great job and I really enjoyed doing payroll and financial statements. After 4 years, I decided to quit this job as I could not grow and expand any further. I was newly married and wanted to start a family and possibly go back to college.
In 1991, I became pregnant. I gave birth to a daughter in June of 1992. Since I had been without a career for over a year, I decided, as much as I loved being a Mom, I needed more! I didn't just want to be known as the woman who could recite the Barney or Sesame Street songs. So I purchased a computer and started my own business.
I started out as a word processing and resume service. Computer consulting and tutoring as added to the list of services in 1993. This was all performed locally. In 1997, we starting building web pages for personal sites and in mid-Summer 1998, we opened Keystone Connect online and offered award winning and affordable web site design, hosting, graphics, e-commerce, marketing and more to small businesses and non-profit organizations locally and nationally. We continue to grow and add more specialties to provide our customers with the best possible and wide-range services to be everything they need to get their business online successfully!
Volunteering is also my other way of keeping up my business and people skills. I volunteer my time to Moms Network Exchange and also to HerPlanet as the co-moderator to a business chat on Wednesday afternoons. Locally, I am on the Board of Directors for the New Alexandria Public Library as well as the chairperson for the Book Committee and Public Relations Committee. I also volunteer my time to build and maintain web sites for our library, fire department, church and a few other small pages for our community.
This mix of business and parenting has worked extremely well. There are always pros and cons to owning a small business, but definitely well worth it. My office in here in my home, my kids can site at a desk beside mine and eat a bagel or work on their computer, while Mommy sites and does her work.
My brain is working and learning every day! I have not wasted my college education or my years of computer and business experience and I feel so much better now that I can sing the praises of success, instead of just only "...I love you, you love me, we're a happy family...." along with Barney!
